Young parents get scared when they hear stories about the “terrible twos.” Take courage, though, you will survive the toddler stage.  Everything is about them and how they feel.  Until they are taught how to share, every toy or piece of food they see automatically belongs to them.

Toddler temper tantrums can have a variety of effects.  Your first thought might be that everyone is focused on you and your screaming child, but getting embarrassed won’t diffuse the situation.  Besides, as a parent, you have many more years of embarrassing situations to look forward to courtesy of your children.  So worrying about what others think during this situation is simply going to stress you and make you feel worse.

Here are a few tips to help you cope during tantrums:

1. Ignore the tantrum. This technique works best when at home.  In public places, you don’t want to ever leave your child unattended as a form of punishment.  Good behavior in public begins at home.  Ignoring a toddler is not harsh.  If your child is squirming on the floor screaming for a cookie, continue to talk to them as if you never noticed.  Eventually, they will get the hint and stop screaming.

2. Avoid instant gratification. In public, toddlers throw tantrums when they are denied something that they want.  Some parents give in to keep their child quiet but a child learns quickly.  Tantrums will continue if they know you will cave.  Simply tell them “no” and keep moving.

3. Don’t get angry. When you scream and they scream the situation is wildly out of control.  You’ll end up crying and your toddler will still be screaming.  In any situation, raised voices mean civilized conversation has ended in favor of basic primal instincts.  Don’t revert back to the days of early man.  Keep using the same calm voice you use when they are behaving to get your child to calm down as well.

4. Praise your toddler when they behave well. Positive reinforcement is better than negative.  In the absence of positive attention a child will behave badly just to get some attention at all.  Acting out and throwing tantrums may be a cry for attention.  Don’t let it get to this point.  Clap and celebrate when they go to the potty successfully and when they put away their toys.  Good manners such as saying “please” and “thank you” deserve a smile and a hand clap as well.

5. Run errands after nap time. Kids get punchy when they get tired.  A toddler misbehaves more often if they are dragged around when they are tired.

6. Carry snacks with you. Low blood sugar can lead to tantrums.  If you are out longer than anticipated and lunch or dinner time is close at hand, let them eat a healthy snack to keep their hunger pains at bay and sugar levels stable.

7. Be consistent in your punishment. At home, you might use “time out” to deal with a tantrum for bad behavior.  In public do the same.  Sit your child on a bench for five minutes or take them to the car.  Eventually they will learn that you are not a pushover and they will begin to behave.

For Baby Moon, most of her time she throws tantrums is to draw my attention and she will increase her volume if I just couldn’t ignore her. So, I normally comfort her with a hug and sweet talk to her. However, if she get angry because of her impatience, I will talk to her seriously and let her understand that this is not a good behaviour.

While doing this post, Mummy Moon wonders why there is not gifts for the coming newborn??!! Daddy forgets about the little one?? Must ask daddy later~~

I have tried to potty train her few months ago and she kept on refuse me when I told her to pee herself. She said “don’t want! don’t want!” and I guess this is the word she most fluent with. Haha.. And during that time I thought maybe it’s too early and she is not ready yet, so I hold the idea back.

Recently I try to speak to her about learning to go toilet by herself. She seems not so rejected and I think I should start to potty train her. I’ve done some researches about potty train and I get some good information which I would like to share with you in case you need to potty train your kids too.

Today I just want to share with you some Baby Moon’s favourite youtube videos. Perhaps you can share with your kids and they might find them very funny and love it too..

The children’s stomach is as small as their fist and here are some tips to encourage toddlers to have the meal.
- This is parent’s duty to provide a range of nutritious food and let them have a choice.
- Avoid snack foods like soft drinks, biscuits and sweets in the house and don’t let them have it before the meals.
- Try not to fill your child up on milk or fruit juice before the meal too.
- Too much of fruit juice or cordials would take away the appetite for the meal.
- To encourage your child’s interest in the food, let them participate in preparing the meal.
- Encourage your toddler to ask for more during the meal time and remove uneaten food without scolding.
- It’s not good to use dessert as a bribe to finish the meal. This makes dessert too special and toddler would pay more attention on the dessert rather than the meal.
- Nutrious desserts such as fruit or puddings are allowed but do give them small serve.
- Always fix the meal time for your toddler so that he knows that is the time for meal and he would expect to have meal before the time arrives.
- Don’t force your toddler to eat. Even adults would not like to be forced to eat food that they don’t like. It would make your child dislike the food if try to force him to eat.
- Keep the eating environment relax and leave the eating up to your toddler.

Drinks that can give your toddler
- Always give your child plenty of water because water is the best drink for thirst.
- Be your toddler’s role model and show them that you enjoy drinking water too.
- Avoid fruit juices that contain a lot of sugar.
- Don’t offer them cordial and soft drinks and save them only for special occasions.
- Children are not suitable for tea, coffee, sport or energy drinks.

Important
- Don’t leave your kid alone to feed himself. They will put all the food into their mouth which could cause coking or vomiting.
- Make sure they swallowed the food before the next mouthful.
- Always prepare soft and easy to chew foods and in small serves.
- Prepare your toddler warm foods or drinks. Cold foods or drinks could damage the stomach and intestines, inhibiting the capacity to digest.
- It’s not good to give kids cold drinks with their meals.
- Fizzy drinks would also cause too much gas in the stomach and it’s not a good idea to give your child drink coke.
- Don’t let your child eat in front of television. It’s not a good habit.
- All the foods you prepare should be yummy and always be your child’s role model in eating.

Lastly, don’t let meal times become a battlefield because food is to be enjoyed. Don’t try to force your toddler to eat or punish them for not eating. If you find meal times very stressful with them you might need to try a different approach. Let your toddler master the skill of feeding himself and let him be independent. He will not want you to feed him anymore once he is able to feed himself.
